The first wartime appeal from Ukrainians to the world

On the third day of the Russian invasion, my fiance Oleksii and I created a film, calling the world to support Ukraine. Thousands of Ukrainians who didn't have time to make original content – too busy fleeing to the safety, hiding from the shelling, and helping each other – used this film as a way to communicate with friends abroad and to spread the word about the war. Our government, ministries, artists, and influencers also shared it to raise international awareness.

We were just lucky to be able to do it

We went on vacation on February 21, 2022. Three days later, Russians attacked Ukraine. On the day our loved ones woke up to explosions, hid in bomb shelters and subway stations, fled to the border with children and pets, we were on the peaceful island of Hydra.
Locals ate their dinners at the marina. Goats grazed on the slopes. The sun set and rose. I couldn’t believe a reality I was in. How can the world continue living, when my country is being torn apart?
The first two days I couldn't eat, move, or even think. I was constantly reading the news, afraid that if I fell asleep, I would not know if something happened to my family and friends. On the third day, the shock had passed. I realised we had the privilege of being in safety, so we had to do something.

I thought that Ukraine NOW – Ukraine's branding campaign created by our colleagues – took on new meaning with the outbreak of war. So, I changed it's manifesto, adding new senses. With the help of many people, we collected photos and videos. Our colleague, Anastasia Burganova, recorded the voiceover hiding in the basement, in the pauses between explosions.
We spent more than 24 hours making this video. Oleksii finished editing it in tears. It was his birthday.

Ukrainians needed to speak out, and we gave them a tool

Although this was not our goal, we are grateful that Campaign and The Drum featured our film, and even more people heard Ukrainian voices.
